The lighting goal for a Zero Energy Home is to comfortably light your home with a minimum amount of electricity. Home lighting typically uses 2,000 kWh of electricity annually– 11% of the total home energy budget.
To achieve your home lighting goal involves three interlinked strategies “Design with Climate,” conservation and efficiency. A reasonable lighting upgrade goal is to save at least 50 percent on electricity use.
Reducing interior electrical consumption has a huge side benefit: It reduces the heating load in your home. Thus your air conditioner has to run less. Interior energy use accounts for 30 percent of total home heat load. Heat gain from the outside and dehumidification account for the other 70 percent.
