Energy: Hot Water

Conservation

Conservation means modifying a cleaning task to eliminate the need for hot water. Perhaps the cleverest way to do this is to use a cold water detergent which can effectively clean the bulk of laundry. Only diapers and very greasy or soiled clothes get noticeably cleaner with hot water. Using cold water for the laundry can save 5,700 gallons of hot water and $50 each year for a family of three.

Revising your dish-washing routine can also avoid the use of hot water. Efficient modern low flow dishwashers make it possible to avoid rinsing greasy dishes. Hand scraping is sufficient preparation for dishwasher loading.

Low Flow (Energy Star) Dishwasher

Most dishwashers manufactured since 1994 use 7 to 10 gallons of water per cycle, while older machines use 8 to15 gallons. New dishwasher designs have reduced water use by including more-efficient washing cycles and controls that allow you to tailor each wash to the specific characteristics of the load.

ENERGY STAR dishwashers use 6 gallons or less per cycle. Surprisingly, dishwashers use less water than hand-washing if the dishes loaded into the machine are only scraped and not pre-rinsed.

It works well with cold water for the bulk of clothes. Diapers would benefit from the use of hot water for stains and disinfecting. Also very heavily greasy or soiled clothes get noticeably cleaner in warm or hot water.

Cold water detergent extends the life of clothes. If three-quarters of clothes are washed in cold water, a family of three would save approximately 5,700 gallons of hot water per year. The resulting energy savings may be 320 kWh of electricity or 18 therms of natural gas; the dollar savings approximate $50.
