Continuous Improvement of Our Homes and Communities

A home exists in the context of its communities which include watersheds and neighborhoods, plants and animals. Our homes contribute to the well-being of our neighbors, as theirs are contributing to our well being.

Dwellgreen mission is to deliver the future you want…one home at a time. This future starts with you and your home, and goes out in ever widening circles to neighborhood, region, and planet. Such a mission requires a process of continuous improvement (CI).

The concept of “greenness” or “efficiency” is a moving target which changes with advances in science and technology. Each home evaluation ups the learning curve for Dwellgreen’s customers, home evaluators, and service providers. Dwellgreen’s website will provide the performance feedback that will gradually raise the game to a higher level.

A core principle of continuous improvement is awareness of how your home works through the science of Earth Metabolics: Where do your home’s energy, water and materials come from? What happens to them as they pass through your home and yard? How can they be used with more efficiency and ecological benefit? What is their ultimate fate in the larger environment?

The future comes both as giant steps (revolution) and baby steps (evolution). A great leap forward would come if solar electricity (photovoltaic) becomes (30-50%) efficient and costs 25% of what it does today. On the other hand, making a zero energy home out of an energy hog, or naturalizing a backyard requires many painstaking baby steps, which often takes many years to accomplish.

Strategies that bring science, accountability and a systems approach to improve the performance of existing buildings will create markets for products and services that strengthen local economies while improving efficiency, wellbeing, and quality of life. Continuous improvement of our homes and communities can create new economic opportunities while helping restore healthy watersheds and ecologies.
